Is Digital Marketing Still Worth Learning in the Age of AI?
Last month I wanted to order a birthday cake for my cousin, so I opened Google Maps and searched for a bakery near Kottakkal. The first one that came up had one blurry photo, a phone number that was switched off, and a closing time that was wrong. I found out later that their cakes are actually very good. But I ordered from someone else, because I could not trust what I saw on my screen.
That bakery did not lose a customer because of bad cake. It lost one because of bad marketing. And this is exactly why I believe digital marketing is still worth learning, even now, when everyone is asking whether machines will take over everything.
The fear is real, but it points at the wrong thing
Yes, software can now write captions, suggest ad ideas, and make posters faster than any of us. I use it myself every day. So I understand why a student in Malappuram looks at all this and wonders if there is any point in starting.
But look at the bakery again. Would a machine have fixed that problem on its own? No. Someone had to notice it, care about it, walk in, talk to the owner, take good photos, correct the details, and then think about what the local customers actually want. That someone is a person who understands the market.
Our market is different
Marketing in Malappuram is not the same as marketing in a big city. Our customers trust people they know. They ask their friends on WhatsApp before they buy. They compare prices but also listen to reviews from neighbours. Festival seasons, wedding seasons, Gulf family orders, all of these change how people spend.
A machine can give you a general idea. It cannot sit in a local shop and feel how the customers behave. That understanding comes only when you live here, speak the language, and pay attention.
What has really changed
Let me be honest. The slow, repeated parts of the job are now much faster. First drafts, small design changes, sorting through data, all of it takes less time. If you refuse to learn this side, you will fall behind.
But when everyone has speed, speed stops being special. What becomes special is judgement. Knowing what to keep, what to throw away, and what will actually make a customer trust a small business.
That is why I call myself an AI integrated digital marketer. I do not let the machine do my thinking. I let it do the heavy lifting while I decide the direction, a bit like how a driver uses the car but still holds the steering.
A little about my own road
Before marketing, I worked for more than two years as a mobile technician. Every day, customers came with phones they did not understand and worries they could not explain. My real job was to listen, explain simply and make them feel safe. Years later I realised this is the heart of marketing too.
Now I am learning digital marketing seriously and working as a web developer on WordPress and Elementor, along with poster design, logo design, video editing and social media. Doing both the marketing and the website side has taught me something simple. A good website nobody visits is wasted, and a busy page that confuses visitors is also wasted. They must work together.
Who should learn it now
If you are a student wondering what comes after plus two or degree, this is a practical path. You can start with small investment and stay right here in Kerala.
If you own a shop or small business, learning the basics will save you from agencies that talk big and deliver little.
If you already have a job, a side skill in social media or SEO can bring a second income.
Where to begin
Learn how people search. Learn how to write in a way that sounds like a real person. Learn to read basic numbers. Learn to run a small ad without burning your money. Learn how a website should be built so that visitors stay. Then, slowly, learn how to use smart software to save your time.
Do not run behind every new trend. Trends change every month. Understanding people does not.
My last word
Digital marketing is not dying. The lazy kind, where every business gets the same copied post, is dying. The honest kind, built on local understanding and modern speed, is only getting started.
If that bakery owner asked me today, I would tell him to fix his photos, correct his timing, and answer his phone. Simple things, but they bring customers.
